Choosing a panic bar for a gate is different than choosing one for a standard door in a building. Most panic hardware is designed to be on the inside of the door and is not exposed to the elements of weather found on the outside of the building. Ideally, it is best to use an exit device that is primarily constructed of stainless steel. The entire device is not made of stainless steel. Mechanical parts such as springs, latches, and strikes are made from standard materials used in most panic bars.
Rim exit devices that provide a latching mechanism on the edge of the panic bar providing the best option to secure a gate. When installing on a gate. It is important to take into consideration that a flat surface that is similar to a door face is needed in order to mount the hardware on the gate. It is best to use an oversized mounting plate. This would also provide security to help prevent someone from reaching through the gate and overriding the device from the outside. Often times, a special mounting bracket is also needed to install the strike, allowing the device to properly latch.
These exit devices are designed to fit on a door thickness of 1 3/4". If the thickness of the gate exceeds this, then it is necessary to by extension kits that come with longer screws and extended tail pieces that would allow for thicknesses up to 2 1/4 inches. It is possible to install on thickness that exceed this, but that may require either a special order from the manufacturer or custom engineering. | | Featured Items We Sell
